“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

On a night where athletes and celebrities come together to celebrate the past year in sports, we expect to see ridiculous styles, popular names, and moments we will never forget. This year’s ESPY’s did not let us down. Peyton Manning’s incredible record breaking performances, the Seattle Seahawks championship run, and Kevin Durant’s MVP season, were all incredible memories from the past year. However, all of those performances took second place to the moving journey and speech delivered by ESPN anchor, Stuart Scott, as he accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance Award.

“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

Stuart has been battling and fighting cancer since 2007, but continues to be an inspiration as he tries to beat the rare form of cancer he has developed. Twenty-one years ago, Jim Valvano gave one of the most inspirational speeches in sports that impacted the lives of millions. He told of his battle through cancer and introduced the V Foundation for cancer research.

“To be honored with this, I now have a responsibility to also not ever give up.”

Even as a public figure, Stuart has allowed cameras to capture his doctor visits, and he publicly speaks of his battle, hoping to be an inspiration to all of those also battling cancer or other illnesses.

“I’m not special. I just listened to what the man said. I listened to all that he said.”

In front of the cameras, it’s as if nothing could phase him. He has entertained the world with his classic lines of “booyah” or “cooler than the other side of the pillow.” It’s what’s goes on behind the scenes that’s tough for him. He reminds those suffering that cancer is not a battle you must face alone.

“I can’t do this ‘don’t give up’ thing all by myself. I got thousands of people on Twitter and on the streets who encourage me.”

The power of social media has played an important role in Stuart’s journey with the disease. The constant support from his fans by engaging with and encouraging Stuart on social media has been something that has given him courage to keep fighting. Stuart offers the world some encouraging words of his own with his powerful ESPY’s speech that has gone viral. His words encouraging all to keep fighting no matter what life brings have offered inspiration to all who hear them. Stuart has impacted the lives of millions with many sports fans expressing their feelings of admiration towards him.

“When you die, that does not mean you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live. So live. Live. Fight like hell and when you get too tired to fight then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you.”
