My name is Jay Allen-Tovar. I go to University of New Mexico. I am from South San Jose California. I grew up with my single mother, sister, grandma, and 3 cousins in a 3 bedroom condominium. We grew up struggling, but always found a way to make our situation work out for the best. I was introduced to a lot of crime at a young age and I always thought of new ways to stay away from it so that I didn’t end up in jail or be looked at as a criminal. I watched childhood friends pass away in front of me at a young age in high school and it really motivated me to stay away from gang life and to stay in school and around basketball. I want to make a better life for my mom and my grandma, in which they are the only ones still in the same house I grew up in and I feel like I’m the only one that can make it better for them through my platform and what I do now.
